A bit of knowledge for a young Ukraine bride

Young people are not so much interested in old traditions, but this bit of knowledge about the past can be of interest to a young Ukraine bride. She might tell this to some of her close people to share this knowledge with others.

In the pre-Christian period young people got married by the early spring, when entire live woke up from the winter sleep and evrything was ready to bloom. Therefore precisely this period of year was considered as the most favorable time for forming the new family.

This tradition changed with the arrival of Christianity, indeed the fasting, which falls out to this period, forbade the amusements of every kind and the walkings. In the Ukraine in the wedding rites for a long time predominated people traditions. Some of them are such ancient that also now it is not easy to find explanation. For example, tradition to pour out fault and to break off glass "on the happiness" rises from even from the beliefs in the God - Sun from the heathen times. Pouring out beverage we subconsiously give an offering to the Sun, and we break off the glass, because not one mortal person can drink from the cup from which the Sun drank itself.

Church wedding for a long time was for the Ukrainians only juridical need, and young could for another pair of years live separately after wedding, until they coud have wedding. The sacred synod required punishing such, allegedly for the conjugal inaccuracy. Only in 19 century, when church permitted being married during the day of wedding, church and people marriage they were united.
